THE NOVEMBER-DECEMBER HOLIDAY

THE NOVEMBER- DECEMBER HOLIDAY We are on holiday  But I guess it's better to say my learners are on holiday .The school broke for the Nov-Dec holidays sometimes back,to be precise it was the second last week of October. Everyone was happy on that particular day . One person wasn't as jovial as the others. She is a mentally disturbed woman who spends her midday at the school. Her presence has never been an issue to the school. She always selects a nice spot .Her usually spot is near the kitchen. After arriving, mostly during mid morning break, she is served  a cup of warm porridge  She takes the porridge and waits for lunch later in the day. Today she's aware that she just had her last meal on the school's bill. She has to come up with an idea where her tomorrow's meal will come from. That thought alone seems to make her sick. My learners are a happy lot. In my closing ceremony that took place inside my class,I took time t...

MY FIRST DAY AS A TEACHER (part 3)

MY FIRST DAY AS A TEACHER (part 3 ) I had to attend to some arising issues that needed my attention. As you might not be aware,  the schools have closed for the December holidays. At home , arising matters have to be dealt with now that I'm available. The learners who were perched on the window were enjoying the attention I had given them. Kids love attention. I went into the class armed with the class register ,a blue pen and of course a red one. I made sure I had a piece of chalk. These are the tools of trade excluding other professional documents. First impressions are always key. You appear too friendly and the kids overwhelm you. You portray an image of an army officer, the children fear you. I greeted them and what came as the reply was a long chorus complete with the school's motto and vision. "Welcome, our teacher ! " . They managed to finish their long salutation. When they settled down , I started intr...

PART TWO

MY FIRST DAY AS A TEACHER (part two) Here we are at it again. A lot of pupils are always excited when they notice a new teacher in their school. It becomes a bigger source of much happiness if the new teacher will be assigned to their class. I was made the class teacher of Standard Two . Most of these kids are between the ages of 7-8 years old. But when teaching a public school ,don't be surprised to find a 11 year old learner in STD 2. The roll of pupils in my class was huge .A total of 102 kids under my watch. For the better part of the year,I realised ,they will be depending on my daily provision of emotional, spiritual ,physical ,psychological and ofcourse educational care. I was approaching the Standard Two class which was centrally located on the school compound. The structure of the class was permanent and we'll roofed. The walls were also painted beautifully with some sections filled with drawings that captured the ever busy attentio...
