Festus loved reading. He was a voracious reader.
He normally borrowed books from his friends and classmates but they soon ran out of books to give him because he had read all.
Festus turned to the local bookstore down the street. The storekeeper gave him books for a very low price and after he was done reading them, he would return them to collect another.
Soon, Festus read everything the bookstore had to offer. He had read all the books in the shelves.
Saddened by the fact that he won’t be getting any new books soon, he confronted the owner to see if he had anything else, to see if he had any book remaining.
The owner of the bookstore thought for a minute, and then said, “Yes, I think I do. Wait here!”
The man entered the small room at the back of the bookstore. When he emerged, he had an old, big book with him. The book looked as if it hasn’t been read for a while because it was covered in thick dust.
The man dusted the cover of the book with a rag, and then he showed it to Festus. The cover of the book had a terrifying picture, and the title at the top read, “The Devil’s Bible (Book Of DΓͺath).”
“This is the last book here but it’s not meant for renting. We sell it once and for all,” the man said. “It is an extremely rare book that was imported from Egypt. I’d advise you not to read it.”
“Please, how much is it?” asked Festus eagerly. He was curious to know what was written in the devil’s bible.
“The book is worth almost 50k, but because it has been here for long, I’d gladly sell it to you at the discounted price of 15k,” the man said.
Festus usually rented books there at the price of 100 so this was difficult for him. He asked the storekeeper to keep the book for him, that he would pay for it at the end of the week.
During the few days that followed, Festus was frugal and thrifty. And when his parents weren’t looking, he would run into their room to steal money from the drawer.
Eventually, the money he had been saving and stealing amounted to 15,000, and he immediately ran down to the street to get the devil’s bible.
When he got there, he threw the money on the counter, and the man handed the book to him.
As he was leaving with his book, the storekeeper stopped him and said, “Never read the first page of the book. Do not read it because you’ll live to regret it.”
When Festus got home, he immediately opened the book. He made sure to skip the first page by closing his eyes as he flipped it over.
He spent the rest of that day reading the book; it was an interesting one.
It followed the tales and stories of mysteries, spiritual encounters and magical spells.
After some days, Festus began to wonder what could be on the first page of the book. He began to ask himself what would be written at the first page that made the storekeeper warn him not to read it.
One morning, the temptation was too much. It clawed and scratched at him until he finally succumbed. He flipped to the very first page of the book and read what was written on it.
Suddenly, he dropped the book in horror and shock.
There, written in bold letters, were the words, “Printed In Githurai. Recommended
Retail Price: Kshs500.”
